Our Potato Varieties

NEW POTATO VARIETY VODKA

Kattegat vintage vodka originates from one single variety of new potato. Much like weather, region and grape gives the significant character to a fine wine, our seasonal spuds donate their signature aroma, or heart, to our vodka through our master blender Solveig Sommarström’s graceful pot still & rectification process. The result is the unique, complex taste of our vintage vodka.

Our vintage vodka is made from the finest handpicked new potato. Cultivated and harvested from our own field on Bjäre, southwest of Sweden. It takes 10 kg of new potatoes to develop 500ml potato vodka. For comparison; a liter grain vodka only need one kilo of grain.

MORE ABOUT FARM & REGION HERE

The definition of a 'new potato' is a potato that not yet has developed a proper peeling. The new potato is harvested early-season, small in shape and only contains a small amount of starch.

ESTELLE

Loved and cherished by farmers for her outstanding qualities and by restaurants for her buttery round taste.

Estelle is the German born queen of new potatoes. Originally namned Penni, she was renamed Estelle at her Swedish entry 2013 after crown heir princess Victoria's daughter. A well-derserved name because of her premium qualities in resistance, yield and royal taste.

APPEARANCE

Estelle is a low-root plant, with perfectly small, round, golden coloured potatoes - packed with taste!

TASTE AND TEXTURE

Butter-coloured firm texture with a mild, round buttery taste.

HARVEST

Famous among farmors because of her rich yields at least 3 to 4 harvests per season. Harvest is between early June and late August.

SOLIST

Early arrival Solist is one of Bjäre's favorite varieties. Her mild taste and attractive shape adorns many restaurant plates.

Solist is, as her sister Estelle, of German heritage and despite her mere age (developed in 1999)  she was crowned 'Potato of the Year' in 2013 among hobby farmers. She is still one of the most popular varieties among farmers at Bjäre. As cherished on the restaurant plate as at  the tables at home.

APPEARANCE

Solist has a round, oval, attractive shape, shallow eyes and smooth yellow skin, with a light yellow to yellow flesh. The plant is of medium height with white flowers.

TASTE AND TEXTURE

Slight floury texture, smooth yellow colour and mild fine taste.

HARVEST

Presumably the earliest table potato variety available in Europe with a rich yield from early June to late August.

GAMMELSVENSK RÖD

Gammelröd Svensk is said to descend from the spuds imported to Sweden by Johan Alströmer's 1720, and offers a beautiful purpur colour and mild taste.

Nolor, Asklanda Röd, Farbror Frans, Finnmarkspotatis, Freker, Rödpäror, Rökingepotatis, Visingsö Röd, Våmhus, och Västerbotten Röd is some of the names the variety has been known as. Today, this earlier common Scandinavian farmed variety, is mainly farmed in larger scale on Island under the name Rauðar Islenskar.

APPEARANCE

Gammelsvensk Röd is round to oval in shape. Both eyes and navel are deeply sunk. The peel is red-purple and content yellow with a touch of red. The sprouts is red-purple too but the thrifty blooming is white with a brush of purple.

TASTE AND TEXTURE

A fine tasting potato high on dry substance and  high suger content which gives a dark colored surface when frying.

HARVEST

Medium-late harvest with plenty of spuds that tend to be rather tiny if the growing season is not in favor.
